魯弗斯·麥克丹尼爾 於1873年被按立為基督教牧師。他從教會音樂中獲得了極大的喜樂。他於19世紀80年代開始創作讚美詩。他寫道：“我內心深處感到，恩主賦予我一項使命，那就是照亮那些在苦難中掙扎的靈魂。我最大的願望是，如果可能的話，通過這些讚美詩祝福我的同胞，從而以他愛子——‘我屬於他，我侍奉他’——的名義榮耀神。”
