此曲於1719年創作，通常以美國作曲家洛厄爾·梅森（Lowell Mason）於1848年改編的曲調演唱，該曲調據傳出自喬治·弗里德里克·韓德爾（George Frideric Handel）之手。這首讚美詩的歌詞是對《詩篇》98篇和《創世記》3章的基督教詮釋。
