當蘇格蘭取消長老會為國教時，他退出國教而加入不屬國教的自由長老會。因他聲音特殊，不適合講道，總會派他負責行政及文書的工作。他酷愛文學，暇時執筆寫聖詩。本詩是最受人歡迎的一首。
