尤其在美國廣受歡迎，被用於宗教和世俗場合。

由英國牧師約翰·牛頓於1779年創作。

1754年，婚後定居利物浦，隨衛斯理兄弟研讀拉丁文及希伯來文聖經。1764年他被按立為牧師，後來他回到英國的教會工作，在1779年出版了〈奇異恩典〉這首聖歌，詞曲之間充滿著虔誠與感恩的心，於是〈奇異恩典〉這首歌，也因此成為美國開國以來，地位僅次於美國國歌的歌曲。同時，風笛演奏版的奇異恩典是美國軍警因公殉職後葬禮上最常見的曲目之一。

作曲: Early American Melody

曲調引用美國古調改編而成。首見於1831年出版的 “The Virginia Harmony, by Carrelland Clayton”，原始曲調一般相信來自於非洲黑奴，後經艾克賽改編成目前的四部合聲，並收錄於艾克賽在1900年出版的 “Make His Praise Glorious”詩歌集中。
