作詞曲：羅伯特·勞利  Robert Lowry (1826~1899)創作於於1864年

羅伯特·勞利出生於賓州費城, 他是一位美國傳教士，在 19 世紀中後期成為一位廣受歡迎的福音音樂作家。本曲是他最著名的讚美詩之一。

1864年夏，紐約市特別潮濕悶熱，流行病的疫情致使許多人死亡與深受疾病之苦。勞利一如往昔探訪慰問，許多教友問他：「牧師，我們在死河邊離別，是否能於生命河邊再相會？」他向這些憂傷的心靈保證，《啟示錄》22章1 節中說到：「天使又讓我看一道生命水的河流，閃耀像水晶，從 神和羔羊的寶座流出來」，聖徒在末日定要在生命河邊相聚，這是神所應許的。

 

隨著疫情的持續擴散，死亡的人愈來愈多，有一日，勞利獨坐一架小風琴旁，試以音樂來緩和他心中抑鬱的情緒，想到教友在生死邊緣的軟弱，突然間，本詩的詞曲一齊湧上心頭。「我們要聚集在河邊嗎？」複歌給了最肯定的答案 -- 「我們聚集生命河邊，在極其美麗、極其美麗河邊，得救聖徒歡聚在一起，歡聚在上主座前。」
